While all-wheel drive is available for those who want it, we don't feel like it's a must-grab like with other full-size SUVs. The Explorer maneuvers exceptionally well for a vehicle of its size and doesn't feel nearly as cumbersome as its boxy exterior might lead you to believe. With the available Trailer Sway Control, even if you are hauling a heavy load through Tyrone, PA you'll still feel in control.
The Explorer offers passengers three rows of seating to choose from, along with plenty of technology to take advantage of. The Explorer's infotainment system offers a standard 8-inch touchscreen and Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® compatibility. This makes connecting your smartphone easy, allowing you and your guests to play music through the available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system.
Some interior design features we'd like to highlight include the available moonroof, which lets additional natural light into an already roomy and airy cabin. There's also a great deal of cargo space for when you need to make room for sports equipment or luggage. This includes a cargo area protector behind the seating in the 3rd row!
The Explorer's exterior does plenty with its looks alone. The base model boasts quite an imposing design, with sharp edges and a domineering grille. With eight color options, the Explorer allows drivers to customize their SUV into their ideal vehicle. The exterior also boasts additional cargo storage options like the available Yakima SkyBox and Ford Accessories Crossbars.
There are eight trim levels of the Ford Explorer. Each has something unique to offer -- let's get into what makes them different.
The base trim comes with the standard 2.3-liter engine and rear-wheel drive. The standard Ford Co-Pilot360™ technology offers drivers safety features like lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beams.
The XLT ups the exterior game with larger wheels, additional headlight accents and a mesh grille.
The Limited is where things start to get a little more up-scale. One of our favorite additions includes the perforated leather upholstery, which makes the seating a little plusher and more breathable.
The Timberline is named for the off-road paths that drivers might explore in it. Besides a more naturalistic look, the Timberline comes equipped with all-terrain tires and a more robust suspension.
The ST brings power-folding third-row seats into the equation, as well as a parking assistance system.
The ST-line brings a little more style into the mix with red interior accents and a heated steering wheel for added comfort once it starts getting chilly around Huntington, PA.
The King Ranch will make you feel like royalty with its wood and leather interior, as well as its King Ranch badges.
The Platinum is the showboat of the eight trim levels with additional silver accent marks on its exterior. Its 21-inch wheels also make quite an impression on anyone you're driving past.
